4 Ways to Prepare for Eternity

We Serve a God that keeps His Word

After Christ’s resurrection, Christ spent 40 days on earth visiting his people; comforting, teaching and strengthen their faith (Read Act 1). He who had said that he was going to be resurrected on the third day, did just what he said. I love the way Jesus sympathized and strengthen the faith of those who were fearful and doubting. He wasn’t upset at their human tendencies, instead, he sought them out and found ways to reassure their faith. (John 20:24-29)

The Disciples and “doubting Thomas” as he is nicknamed by many Christian, shows a very realistic perspective of human nature and behavior. Our fears and doubts do not surprise God at all. But in his love and understanding, He seeks to comfort and reassure our faith in Him.

What I love and respect about God, is that He does just what he says he will do. He said that he would send a Redeemer, and He did. (Genesis 3:15) (Genesis 12:7) (Matthew 1:23) He said that His son, Jesus Christ would die for our sins and be resurrected on the third day, and that too was fulfilled.

We serve a God that keeps His Word. His word never fails. So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

The Need for Preparation

The same God who crafted our Redemption Story and sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins, gifting us Salvation. Is the same God who wants to spend eternity with us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17.

To gain everlasting life with Christ, we must prepare for His second coming. And just like all the other prophecies that he spoke of, were fulfilled. This is no different. Jesus is coming, and no one knows the day but The Father (Matthew 24:36).  So, it is wise for us, to prepare in advance and do maintenance then it is to rush last minute. Here are 4 ways we can prepare for Eternity.

4 Ways to Prepare for Eternity

 1. Examine yourself – Self-examination is important in every Christians life because it helps us to discern and identify our weaknesses and sin issues. When we know ourselves, we can be more intentional with the way we navigate through life circumstances and temptations.

I love how David invited the Lord in this process and asked the Creator of all things, to tell him about himself. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalms 139:23-24 This should be our prayer, as we seek God to reveal those character flaws that we cannot see.

2. Repent – We cannot talk about repentance without talking about obedience. To obey God is to die of our fleshly desires, to turn away from our sins and choose Christ. This is the declaration of love, to love God is to obey Him. To gain a better perspective on repentance, we must look at it through a different lens. A lens of love and not of lack. A lens of loving compromises and not of selfishness.

Love is at the center of obedience. We love God so much that we choose not to hurt Him, and by not hurting him, we choose to not harm ourselves. God’s commandments are good, and He like our earthly parents, created boundaries to safeguard us from danger.

Repentance like obedience is an act of love because we choose to turn away and give up our own desires for sin, for the will of God; which is righteousness in Christ Jesus and everlasting life.

God’s Promise

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40

3. Stay Connected – It is important that we create time for God in our personal lives, and not only in community settings of small groups and church services. Staying connected to God outside of church further helps us build a solid foundation of faith, trust, experience, and personal relationship. In doing so we grow and mature in Christ and become more moldable for His glory. As we stay connected through, daily devotion, prayer, and bible study, He continues to edify, refine, and convicts us, helping us to change.

God’s Promise

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

4. Submit to God – Submitting to God, is another form of obedience. When we submit ourselves to God, we choose to do his will and purpose, over our own. When we submit ourselves to God, He is able to guide us in the right direction. More simply, the act of submission is to seek God for direction and answers before making any moves. It is getting a clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and moving or not moving according to the direction or answer that was given.  Submission is choosing God’s way over our own and having the peace that His way is better.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

God’s Promise

“But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ Jeremiah 7:23
